Invited speaker to (DFG/CDZ) China-German Perspectives on AI-supported Educational Technologies

Artificial intelligence and/or algorithmic optimization can support learners, teachers and administration to obtain the best outcome from didactical learning scenarios. For our team work on learning group formation algorithms and algined empirical studies I was invited to report at the symposium in Wuhan, March 2019.

During the 5 day exchange in Wuhan, China, I will speak and discuss with the other experts from Germany and China about "Insights into Algorithmic Learning Group Formation Using Personality Traits".

The major results are based on my joint work with a team at Mainz University around paedagogical psychologist Dr. Henrik Bellhäuser and a team around PhD candidate René Röpke at the department of computer science around Prof. Schroeder at RWTH Aachen. We started our investigation, algoritmic development and empirical studies in 2013 and meanwhile found more and more insights into relevant criteria for learning group formation. Explicitly, extraversion and conscientiousness in a certain constellation seem to have an significant impact on group performance, satisfaction with group work, and group cohesion (see e.g. i-com article from 2018).

In 2019 the FROG project for rapid collaborative learning setups has contacted us with interest to integrate our GroupAL algorithm for their group formation. Additionally, at University of Potsdam an REST-API based on our C# implementation was realized by Julian Dehne. Thank you.

This work was formerly awarded the eTeaching-Award at TU Darmstadt and two times best full-paper (one, two), one best demo award. Such support is encouraging for our ongoing work.
